Jay Watts

New Jersey native Jay Watts only half-jokingly muses. Described as the urban pop/R&b “It Boy”, singer/songwriter/producer JAY WATTS – is set out to ambitiously deliver on the promising genre-fusing momentum of noteworthy and infectious breakthrough single releases over the past few years with his soon-to-be-released debut EP, “Antidote.” Jay has been coming into his own in the music industry over the last several years and his hard work has paid off. Whether his beat-ballad flow of popularly streamed, hip-hop love story-like “Single Friends,” that mainstream-tinged head-boppin’ “My Dreams,” or the low-key anthemic pop-rock sheen of his Power Rangers soundtrack standout “Watch Me Walk,” which afforded Major League Baseball’s The Show exposure, and the latter grew into a heavily streamed urban success. The self-professed “King of Ratchet Pop” has confidently taken his time creating a premiere set which more than delivers on audience curiosity.

Coming from humble beginnings, he says he could be found “freestyling at the lunch tables, cracking jokes, shutting talent shows down” and front-center every single time for his family’s favorite pastime….karaoke. “I come from a family that likes get-togethers,” Jay recalls. “To this very day, they still do karaoke…singing all of the old school songs. So I originally got into it just from that. When they weren’t using the karaoke machine I would just take it into my room and experiment.” While he wasn’t taking formal music lessons, his passion and talent were so clearly evident by the time he was 12 that his mother booked his first studio session. Now armed with a core audience, a new label home (Music Matters Entertainment/SRG-ILS Records), and a hits-worthy collection of brand-new songs which reflect immense artistic growth and a renewed sense of direction, Jay Watts is ready to take the world by storm.

His forthcoming EP “Antidote” aims to not only establish him as a household name but as a musical phenomenon to be reckoned with amongst his peers…past and present. His multi-influenced, relationship-based, mainstream-ready set – produced by IKXNNX, Reefa, and 12Keys — does boast a wide-ranging contemporary sound that’ll simultaneously conquer R&B and pop audiences starting with the smoothed-out R&B melody and slick-grooved beat ballad flow of the set’s first single, “Numb.” Check out the Visualizer here.

Sequenced alongside similarly radio-ready joints like the immediately infectious, summer-vibe urban pop bounce of “Problemas;” his airy, late-night-creeping’ “High Notes;” the dreamy-n-bumpin’ relationship realness of “F*ck Boy” and the beat-driven, hypnotic melody of the title track. Music lovers will want to immediately listen to the infectious EP.

“My approach to the music is genuine,” he reflects, on what sets him apart from the pack. “This is simply me and my personality, and I’m not trying to fit in or follow. When all is said and done, I just want to be one of the greatest entertainers of all time.”

theGrio Commemorates April Ryan’s History-Making Milestone as Longest-Serving Black Female White House Correspondent

After covering five U.S. presidential administrations, theGrio’s April Ryan celebrates 25 illustrious years of service, thus making her the longest-serving Black female White House correspondent.

April Ryan made history this January as the longest-serving Black female White House correspondent and longest-serving African American reporter covering Black news. Her tenure spans five U.S. presidential administrations and many extraordinary historical events. When reflecting on this career milestone, a modest Ryan says, “I’ve questioned five American presidents [and] they’ve called me by name,” an honor many will never experience.

April Ryan defines this pivotal moment in her career as “humbling.” She goes on to tell theGrio, “I grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, where some would say the word failure is built into our very existence.” “But as fate would have it, the Morgan State University graduate would go on to become one of the most recognizable and accomplished Black journalists covering Black issues at the White House.”

As Ryan recounts her illustrious career as a Black woman in the White House, she admits to theGrio she “stands on the shoulders of Black history trailblazers like Henry McAlpin, the first African American reporter to attend a U.S. presidential news conference; Alice Dunnigan, the first African American female reporter to receive White House credentials; and Ethel Payne, who was coined the “First Lady of the Black Press.” April Ryan’s tenure also comes on the heels of Wendell Goler, the longest-serving Black male reporter to cover the White House, retiring after 28 years.

From traveling with Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama to Africa to visiting New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina with President George W. Bush, Ryan has used her reporting chops and charisma to build long-lasting relationships in Washington.

As April Ryan is honored by peers, colleagues, and distinguished political figures like former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, everyone agrees April Ryan is passionate, hardworking, and tough yet fair!

Jerry Lopes, Ryan’s former boss at American Urban Radio Network, fondly shares with theGrio that “April was always comfortable in her own skin [and kept] it real. I think newsmakers loved that about her and, as a result, bonded and confided in her – that’s part of what I call the April magic.”

Former President Barack Obama shared warm words in a statement saying, “Every day, you help keep our democracy alive by relaying timely, accurate information to the American people. Through multiple administrations and countless news cycles, you have asked tough questions to hold the White House accountable- all while ensuring that issues affecting Black communities get the attention they deserve. You have my enduring gratitude, and I look forward to seeing all you will accomplish in the next chapter of your unparalleled career.”

Former President Bill Clinton praised the White House correspondent with a tweet reading, “Congratulations on your anniversary, @AprilDRyan! I’ve appreciated you and your reporting since the time I was President — tough but fair and totally on the level. Here’s to many more years of good work.”

In another congratulatory tweet, White House Press Secretary Jennifer Psaki said, “I have known @AprilDRyan now through working on press team[s] for two Presidents. She is smart, tough as nails, passionate, has a great sense of humor, and pushes every day (believe me!) for more information for the American people. congrats @AprilDRyan”.

Allen Media Group Founder/ Chairman/ CEO Byron Allen doted on theGrio’s April Ryan in a celebratory social media tribute video, saying, “April’s an icon … she is a phenomenal, phenomenal reporter and correspondent. The work she’s done in D.C. over the last 25 years has just been outstanding and what I love about her is that she’s unapologetically Black about making sure politicians stay focused on what we need as Black people in America. She is simply a great American because her point of view is best for all Americans.”

theGrio’s moving tribute video also featured Representative Maxine Waters, Ben Crump, Dr. Martha Kumar, and Bernice King. All offered April Ryan high praise, deep appreciation, and encouragement as she continues her career!

As with most, all of April Ryan’s success didn’t come without some tribulations. During her time covering the 45th Presidential administration, April had viral exchanges with then-President Donald Trump and his staff, as she persistently sought the truth. While April said she doesn’t like to relive those moments, she emphasizes, “I’m still here.”

“I stand on the pillars of the Founding Fathers, who I’m sure were slave owners. They didn’t expect April Ryan to be here [but] I’m still here, reporting,” says a reflective Ryan. Even in April’s moments of adversity, she continues to climb to unimaginable career heights!

All year long, join theGrio as they celebrate the history-making and history-chasing April Ryan! Arriving in time to kickoff Black History Month, “Cooking with OhSoBella” premieres Feb. 1. on Paradox Universe.

The show—catering to an audience mainly of young African-American women—gives Brown “the chance to be herself and have fun creating great dishes in the casual, ‘regular folk’ way,” Mbah said.

The fun unfolds in a conventional TV studio kitchen, but that’s the only thing conventional about “Cooking with OhSoBella,” he promised.

“There’s no hiding the blemishes—sometimes Christine’s ingredients don’t all end up in the mixing bowl, sometimes she blurts out profanities when things don’t go right, sometimes she even does spit-takes while drinking bottled water when she can’t believe what she’s just seen or heard from her guests,” Mbah explained. “Christine makes mistakes and laughs about it and we keep it all in. The bloopers are baked into the show, which is an embrace of everyday cooking’s imperfections.”

Mbah—who is also the CEO of Paradox Universe—said Brown has long hungered to serve up this type of program.

“But everyone she collaborated with to make her ideas a reality kept trying to push her into formulaic presentations that have been overdone and that audiences are tired of seeing,” Mbah offered. “All Christine wanted was a show where she could truly be herself and have a grand old time creating magic in the kitchen. Paradox Universe alone was able to catch her vision and make it happen.”

Mbah said he believes “Cooking with OhSoBella” (OhSoBella is Brown’s Instagram handle) will be a ratings success because “we’ve all had it up to here trying to be ‘perfect’ in the kitchen and in other aspects of our lives. This show is about being normal and appreciating that normal is cool.”

Each episode isn’t just about food, Mbah indicated. “Christine will also be sharing stories about her life’s journey,” he said. “The food is her way of exploring different cultures—and doing so by taking a unique, healthy, and soulful approach.”

In the debut episode, Brown demonstrates how to make drunken fried chicken, a favorite from her childhood in the Deep South.

Welcome to the Blumhouse

Welcome to the Blumhouse is an anthology of unique and unsettling thrillers showcasing diverse casts led by emerging filmmakers, including several female directors. Produced by Blumhouse — maker of provocative films and television such as Get Out, Whiplash, “Sharp Objects” and The Gift — and available exclusively on Amazon Prime Video worldwide, the first four films in the series will be released in October 2020, with four more titles set to arrive in 2021.

“Amazon and Blumhouse were aligned in wanting to make original stories from diverse perspectives,” says Blumhouse founder and CEO Jason Blum. “It’s been a priority for both companies to work with women and underrepresented filmmakers and give a platform to new voices. One of the ways we’ve been able to make great movies and TV shows is to tap into pools of talent that haven’t been drawn on over the years.”

Welcome to the Blumhouse focuses on thrillers, suspense and psychological dramas — genres beloved by audiences but rarely offered in theaters. The films explore relatable themes about cultural differences, societal pressures and personal anxieties, and feature emerging stars alongside established actors in surprising new roles. While each film stands on its own, they all share a through-line of family and love as either a redemptive or a destructive force.

The result is a series of unforgettable psychological thrillers that tap into our deepest fears and are guaranteed to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

Candyman

Oscar® winner Jordan Peele unleashes a fresh take on the blood-chilling urban legend: Candyman. Filmmaker Nia DaCosta (Little Woods, upcoming Captain Marvel 2) directs this contemporary incarnation of the cult classic.

For as long as residents can remember, the housing projects of Chicago’s Cabrini-Green neighborhood were terrorized by a word-of-mouth ghost story about a supernatural killer with a hook for a hand, easily summoned by those daring to repeat his name five times into a mirror. In present day, a decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down, visual artist Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II; HBO’s Watchmen, Us) and his partner, gallery director Brianna Cartwright (Teyonah Parris; If Beale Street Could Talk, The Photograph), move into a luxury loft condo in Cabrini, now gentrified beyond recognition and inhabited by upwardly mobile millennials.

With Anthony’s painting career on the brink of stalling, a chance encounter with a Cabrini-Green old-timer (Colman Domingo; HBO’s Euphoria, Assassination Nation) exposes Anthony to the tragically horrific nature of the true story behind Candyman. Anxious to maintain his status in the Chicago art world, Anthony begins to explore these macabre details in his studio as fresh grist for paintings, unknowingly opening a door to a complex past that unravels his own sanity and unleashes a terrifying wave of violence that puts him on a collision course with destiny.

Lucky Prescott (Isabela Merced, Dora and the Lost City of Gold) never really knew her
late mother, Milagro Navarro (Eiza González, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw), a
fearless horse-riding stunt performer from Miradero, a small town on the edge of the
wide-open frontier.
Like her mother, Lucky isn’t exactly a fan of rules and restrictions, which has caused her
Aunt Cora (Academy Award® winner Julianne Moore) no small amount of worry. Lucky
has grown up in an East Coast city under Cora’s watchful eye, but when Lucky presses
her own luck with one too many risky escapades, Cora picks up stakes and moves them
both back with Lucky’s father, Jim (Oscar® nominee Jake Gyllenhaal), in Miradero.
Lucky is decidedly unimpressed with the sleepy little town. She has a change of heart
when she meets Spirit, a wild Mustang who shares her independent streak, and
befriends two local horseback riders, Abigail Stone (Mckenna Grace, Captain Marvel) and
Pru Granger (Marsai Martin, Little). Pru’s father, stable owner Al Granger (Emmy winner
Andre Braugher, Fox’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine), is the best friend of Lucky’s father.
When a heartless horse wrangler (Emmy nominee Walton Goggins, FX’s Justified) and
his team plan to capture Spirit and his herd and auction them off to a life of captivity and
hard labor, Lucky enlists her new friends and bravely embarks on the adventure of a
lifetime to rescue the horse who has given her freedom and a sense of purpose, and has
helped Lucky discover a connection to her mother’s legacy and to her Mexican heritage
that she never expected.
Spirit Untamed is the next chapter in DreamWorks Animation’s beloved franchise that
began with the 2002 Oscar-nominated film Spirit: Stallion of Cimarron and includes an
Emmy-winning TV series. The screenplay is by Aury Wallington (Netflix and DreamWorks

Making the Benztown list is a big honor for a variety of reasons,” said Kelly. “First of all, it’s industry acknowledgement of all the hard work that voiceover artists do – day-in and day-out – to keep radio and voiceover art alive and thriving. There’s also a deeply personal and humbling sense of satisfaction for me, appearing on this list with so many other amazing artists and performers. Each of our journeys have been uniquely different and inspiring – but we’re all a family of sorts. And I’m deeply grateful to be where I am today.”

K104, Dallas/Ft. Worth: A Leading Station for Over Four Decades

“Cayman is one of the premiere voices in media and culture today,” said Service Broadcasting Group’s Head of Content, George “Geo” Cook. “He and I have been looking for ways to collaborate for a while now. Thankfully, Cayman’s agent Robin Steinfeld at Don Buchwald & Associates, and my Head of Production Jerry Vigil made it happen. All of us at K104, DeDe in the Morning, and the SBG Content Factory are elated to have Cayman join our meta-team and add his distinctive voice and creative talent to our content.”

“Geo and I have a long history, and I’m absolutely thrilled to be working with him,” said Kelly. “I first walked into K104’s studios as a young man on a promo tour for a calendar that I was in, 21 years ago, long before I became a radio imaging voice. I remember thinking, I would love to work at this radio station! And here I am now, full circle. Life has a funny way of working out.”

The Voice of Cayman Kelly at KZCE, Phoenix

“Cayman Kelly is top shelf,” said radio veteran and KZCE founder, John Candelaria. “When we developed the unique sound of KZCE, we wanted to create more than a big voice growling at female listeners; we wanted someone who can actually have fun with scripts and connect with the target. Cayman is that signature voice. He can turn it up, turn it down, and his range is limitless. He actually makes my copy come alive. He is easy to work with and his turnaround is fast and always correct. I have not received one error with any of his reads. I am very meticulous when it comes to casting a new station and grateful that Cayman is more than a voice person. He is a true partner that collaborates with me to help build the brand.”
